Address: 1639 W 105th St
Published In: Weekly Review (1923-1928)

BUILT among the virgin oak trees between Prospect Avenue and Drew Streets is the home of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Scott, 1638 W. 105th Place. A flagstone walk leads up to this charming English cottage, built of variegated red face brick, with rough troweled stucco and brown stained timbers. The roof is of heavy asphalt shingles in autumn shades.

Entrance through the arched oak door admits to the stair hall. A walnut staircase leads to the second floor and opposite the staircase is an arch which leads to the living room.

The living room is of the studio type; the ceiling is carried up into the rafters with heavy wood beams. A group of four casement windows with leaded panes provides a southern exposure. There is also a pair on the west, and those on the east have on each side open book shelves that extend to the ceiling. A large, deep, natural fireplace faced with local field stone and with a stone hearth dominates this room. The walls here are covered with croftex tinted in old ivory. Wrought iron fixtures and andirons carry out the studio effect. To the east, through a pair of French doors, is the sun parlor, finished in green, with walnut rafters.

The dining room is directly in back of the living room, separated from it by a pair of French doors. This room is paneled and glazed in antique ivory. The kitchen is to the west of the dining room and is lined with cabinets arranged to reduce housework to the minimum. The walls are finished in ivory and the cabinets in French grey with green trim. A grade entry on the west leads to the kitchen, the ice box compartment and the basement.

To the north of the dining room is a small hall with a large linen closet. Two large bedrooms and a bath equipped with a shower open into this hall.

On the second floor is a center hallway giving access to two very large bedrooms and a large, cedar-lined closet. There is also ample attic storage space.
