ONE of the most tasteful of the new residences in Beverly Hills is the home of Mr. and Mrs. F. Marvin Austin, 10445 Hamilton Avenue, done in the English domestic style of architecture. There are six rooms, bath, breakfast room and sleeping porch and garage attached.
The house, facing the west, has a terrace and front stairway of rough cut stone, while the walk approach is flagstone. Through the front entrance one enters a vestibule with a red tile floor, English palm plastered walls and vaulted sand blasted ceiling. This connects directly with the reception hall through French doors, and the hall is similarly finished, with English oak wood trim. There are full length casement windows here and English type staircase with ornamental iron balusters.
From the hall to the living room at the front there is a drop of two steps, giving a high ceiling effect to the room, which is finished in the same manner as the reception hall. Here, too, are found the full length casement windows, extending almost to the floor, four at the front, two on the south opening to the terrace, and two on each side of the large fireplace in the north wall. The finish in the dining hall, to the east of the reception hall, is similar to that of the living room. The hallway leads to a lavatory, at the end, and to the left, under the stairs, are book cases, and to the right a guest closet and passageway leading to the kitchen. The kitchen, with tile wainscoting, is equipped with mechanical refrigeration, a pantry and built-in cabinets. The breakfast room, at the extreme east, is finished to harmonize with the dining room.
The upper floor contains three bedrooms and the bath, which is done in tile. All of the rooms are large, with cross ventilation and ample closet space. The two rear chambers connect directly with the large sleeping porch.
The basement, well lighted and ventilated, is entirely open and well equipped with laundry apparatus and fruit cellars. A hot water heating plant is used.
A deep toned tapestry brick is used for the exterior of the house, and also for the garage. The roof is of brown composition shingle and the metal work of copper. All of the windows are glazed, with leaded glass.
