The H. L. Cassell Residence

THE home of H. L. Cassell, 10439 Hamilton Avenue, is an attractive example of the American use of the Italian style of architecture, with its seven large, airy rooms and convenient arrangement. A cream colored pressed brick, with green tile for the roof, is used for the exterior construction. The lot, though small, is carefully landscaped and terraced, as shown in the picture above. The stone arched friezes above the doors and windows lend the typical Italian touch, and the color scheme is enhanced by the green cement walk and porch floor, which is laid like square tile.

The entrance, facing south on the open porch, with its orange and blue awning, gives to a reception hall of large dimensions. The hall contains a staircase of silver oak, wax finished, doors to the kitchen, a cloak closet, a lavatory and the basement stairway, and opens through wide arches to the living room on the west and the dining room on the east.

The living room is unusually large and well ventilated. Three pairs of French door windows open on the west to small iron balconies, two pairs of casement windows are on the south, and the west wall is broken by two stained glass windows set on each side of the Italian marble fireplace. The room is finished in rough plaster of a cream tone, with silver oak, wax finished, for the wood trim. A heavy raisin colored carpet is used. The fixtures are polychromed with tiffany bulbs and at the windows heavy polychromed curtain poles with colored draperies are used.

The dining room presents an unusually rich effect in its color scheme. The rough plaster of the walls is broken by panels in painted design, with silver oak borders. The wood trim is also silver oak. The fixtures, both wall and hanging, are of silver and crystal. The heavy curtain poles are black, red and gold and the heavy draperies at the windows, on the south and east, are red and gold. French doors open from this room to the entrance porch, and a swinging door connects with a butler’s pantry and the kitchen. A two-car garage is found at the rear.

The upper floor contains a large central hallway, which opens to two bedrooms on the east, both occupying corner positions, to the bath at the center south, and to the large master bedroom on the west. These rooms have large closet space and all of them have cross ventilation. The master bedroom extends across the entire west side of the upper floor, and has exposures on the north, west and south sides.
