THE W. M. Keener home, at 10206 S. Prospect Avenue, is an attractive example of the modified English type of home, the type of house that wears well in appearance as well as in structure.
The house, situated on a corner, provides an approach that is pleasing. A box hedge, shoulder high, borders the lawn on the two street fronts and over the top of it one catches a glimpse of tall flowers. On entering the gate on the Prospect Avenue side, a garden of fall flowers comes into view, forming a pleasing foreground of color. The house itself has walnut finish boarding more than half up the sides, the rest being in grey stucco. A wide brick chimney on the north side is an attractive feature. The roof, while tall and sloping, is not as high as the pure English type.
A large doorway admits one from the small, open porch into a large hallway. Leading from the hall are the entrances to the living room, dining room, the curving stairway to the upper floor, and the entrance to the kitchen and a small study. French doors and open partitions are used with good effect. The French doors lead to the dining room, and the open partition, square cut and hung with deep blue portieres, leads to the living room.
Subdued tones dominate on the first floor of the home. The dining room is in grey, with just a hint of silver in it, with oak woodwork. The other rooms, the living room and the study, are done in the same grey, with walnut finish. The furnishings harmonize with the general color scheme and style of the place, giving the home a quiet and tasteful appearance.
The upper floor has a large hallway, from which are entrances to four bedrooms and a bath. These rooms are quite large and conveniently arranged and are done in lighter tones than those on the lower floor. Most of the woodwork is in ivory, but in some of the rooms a light maple finish is used.
Modern equipment is used throughout and there is a cemented basement and an attic.
Although the Keener home was built twelve years ago, the conservative good taste used in its construction makes it stand up well in comparison with the newer dwellings in the vicinity. A large and handsome but rather belligerent collie completes the picture.
