Dignity and comfort in the smaller house are well exemplified in the home of J. H. Dunbar, 10031 Longwood Drive. It is built of yellow stucco, with dark slate roof, and presents a fifty-foot, two-story frontage to the street, materials and design giving the impressive mass effect usually attained only by far larger residences.
The front door is set back in an arched entrance alcove, which both affords protection from inclement weather and pleasingly breaks the monotony of the front wall line. Entrance is into a rectangular hall, from which French doors with small leaded panes opens into the dining room on the left, an archway to the living room on the right, and a door to the kitchen at the rear, which contains the broad, three-landing stairway to the second floor. A side extension of the hall has doors leading into a den and to a ground-level rear entrance way. A door from the latter opens on stairs to the basement.
The effect of size in the living room is enhanced by three Moorish type arches, which occupy the entire end leading to a sun porch. The outer two arches are closed to more than half their height by bookcases. A fireplace of dark red brick, beamed ceiling and radiator seats add to the comfortable aspect of the living room. Walls of the sun room are of natural stucco, windows casement type.
The dining room walls are covered with grass cloth. Buffet is built-in. A door in the rear communicates with the service pantry, containing built-in china closets.
The kitchen is finished in blue and white. A large pantry provides storage space, and a side door opens upon a small rear porch.
The hall on the second floor to which the stairs lead is well lighted by four large casement windows above the stair landing. Doors from this hall give entrance to three bedrooms and bath and large owner’s bedroom, from which there is a sleeping porch. All bedrooms are amply supplied with closet space and windows are large, furnishing an exceptional amount of light on account of the white finish of the second floor rooms.
A two-car garage at the rear of the house is reached by a short walk from the rear entryway.
