THE residence of Murray Glenn Harding, 9801 S. Winchester Avenue, is of the English cottage type and was designed by Mr. Harding. The home is admirably situated, located as it is on the southeast corner of Winchester Avenue and 98th Street, with a large lot.
Of brick construction, and colored slate shingles for the roof, the residence presents an attractive picture. Good use of the steep English roof lines has been made.
The entrance is on the northwest corner and is sheltered under an arch. The heavy door gives to the reception hall, which is two steps below the level of the living room.
The living room is on the Winchester Avenue side and is gained through a wide arch. This room has three exposures, north, west and south, with casement windows. A large red brick fireplace is built into the south wall, with a built-in bookcase, extending almost to the ceiling, adjacent. A rough plaster finish is used for the walls, with ivory for the wood trim. The fixtures are done in dull polychrome, and are of the candle design, both wall and hanging.
The dining room, on the southeast corner of this floor, can be gained from either the reception hall or the living room, through arches. The finish here is the same as that used in the living room. The fixtures, however, are of silver, with a large central chandelier. French doors break the east wall of this room and open to a porch at the rear.
The kitchen occupies the northeast corner and is finished in green and tan. It connects with the dining room through a swinging door and has no pantry. There are two outside entries to the kitchen, one on the east side, and one on the north, which opens to a rear hallway and the basement.
A winding staircase leads from the lower hall to a centrally located hallway above. This upper hall contains the linen closets. The larger bedroom occupies a position directly above the living room, with exposures on the south and west. It is finished in grey and ivory.
The other large bedroom is found over the dining room, and is done in mauve and cream. A large closet connects the two rooms, and contains a window for outside light and ventilation. The bath is located centrally on the east side of this floor, between the bedroom just mentioned and a small guest room. A large attic extends over the whole house, providing plenty of storage space.
A hot water, coke burning heating plant is used. The garage is found at the rear of the property, with access to 98th Street.
