THE English cottage residence of Mr. and Mrs. Sydney Loughlin, newcomers to Beverly Hills, located at 9221 S. Hoyne Avenue, has several unusual features that will be of interest to Ridge home builders.
The house contains six rooms and a solarium, which adjoins the living room, and is constructed of a vari-colored brown brick on the order of tapestry brick. The steep lines of the roof and the brown and cream trim present a pleasing view for the exterior.
The entrance, an arched door, is found on west, facing Hoyne Avenue, and admits one immediately to the living room, a hall effect being gained by the angle of the wall. To the right of the entrance there is a guest closet with a full length mirror door. The stair to the second floor is to the left of the entrance.
The living room, extending to the south to a bay with four tall casement windows, is finished in textone. A deep fireplace of Tudor design is found in the west wall, flanked by windows. An unusual bit of decoration is found here. Instead of the ordinary wood moulding two inch hemp rope, twisted into a coil, is used. This is polychromed in dull tones to harmonize with the textone finish.
But the most attractive feature here is the solarium. This joins the living room on the east, but is two steps lower. A wide arch separates it from the living room, and from each side of the arch a wrought iron railing extends, turning to follow the steps. The sun room is finished the same as the living room and has a row of five windows on the east with two more on the south. A lantern type of light is hung from the center of the ceiling. The fixtures in the living room are of wrought iron, polychromed, and with Tiffany bulbs.
The dining room is found on the northeast corner, and connects with the kitchen, on the north, through a swinging door. A small breakfast nook is found in the kitchen, which is conveniently equipped with built-in cupboards. There is no pantry.
The kitchen can also be gained from the living room, by way of the stair landing. The landing, at the base of the stairway, goes down two steps, on one side to the living room and on the other to the kitchen.
The stair leads to an east-west hall on the second floor. Here there are three rooms; two bedrooms and a sewing room. The larger bedroom, done in tan and green, is on the south and the other on the north. The sewing room is located at the east end of the hall, and the bath, finished in a pleasing grey-green tile, is at the west end. A hot water heating plant is used.
The cottage is situated on a lot 59 by 179 feet, with a garage at the rear. Mr. and Mrs. Loughlin have extensive landscaping plans which they have not had time to complete as yet.
