THE residence of Mrs. R. W. Evans, 9914 Longwood Dr., is a Frank Lloyd Wright house of typical Japanese architecture and is one of the most admired homes in the Ridge District.
The house is built on a 150 foot lot and has a frontage of 100 feet making it stand out very distinctly. A driveway from Longwood Dr. leads up to the porte cochere and goes back of the house to the garage.
A large combination reception hall and music hall leads into the living room which extends clear across the house. The living room has three double doors leading to the sunparlor at the south end of the house.
Off the reception hall is the dining room which forms the north wing or extension of the house, along which the driveway runs. The entire residence is heated by hot water heat but none of the radiators are exposed to view, being placed either behind window seats or hidden by a wall effect.
A china closet serves as a wall between the dining room and forms a hallway leading from the reception hall to the kitchen. Adjoining the kitchen is the maid’s room.
A unique lighting effect is used throughout the house, particularly in the dining room where a portion of the ceiling is diffused with light instead of the ordinary dome light or wall light effects.
On the second floor are four bedrooms and 2 baths.
The house has a full size basement including a drying room, coal cellar, fruit closet and furnace room.
For the construction cement was used over lathe and the outside trimming is rough cypress. The interior trimming is of natural oak, unstained and a large number of pieces of furniture throughout the house were made of this same oak.
The garage will accomodate two cars and has a chauffeur’s room and lavatory. It has a separate hot water heating plant.
