THE subject of the sketch this week, the residence of Mr. and Mrs. B. L. DuVal, 2140 W. 103rd St., is a bungalow of the California type, different from those now being built in this locality owing to the restrictions of the present fire ordinance. The stucco and shingle outer walls, low-gabled roof with wide eaves, consisting of main section and end gables of lower elevation, the pergola with its columns forming a piazza along the entire east side of the house, present a particularly artistic exterior. This is enhanced in the summer by the Dorothy Perkins roses which grow in profusion across the front of the house and around the pergola, the whole being set off by a privet hedge of luxuriant growth. The lot is 53 feet by 180 feet.
The interior consists of five rooms and bath, finished in oak trim stained dark green with oak floors throughout. The living and dining-room together, which are virtually one room 14 by 29 feet, occupy the entire east portion of the bungalow. A series of four windows opening onto the pergola, with three windows at the front and two at the rear of this room, give abundant light. The ceiling is beamed and the walls are canvas covered and tiffanized with a blending of colors on the burnt orange scale. A feature of the furnishing is the fact that the dining chairs, the buffet, the dining table of refectory type which serves as a library table also; the writing desk, dressers in the bedrooms, and the benches over the radiators were all built and finished to match the oak trim of the rooms.
The two bedrooms each 12 by 12 feet, the bathrooms, 6 1/2 by 9 feet and the kitchen, 9 by 12 feet, occupy the west portion of the house. There are three clothes closets, a good-sized pantry, and back entrance hall where the refrigerator is placed. The plumbing is modern; the heating system is hot-water and a Ruud Automatic Heater furnishes hot water for bathroom, kitchen and laundry.
Economy of arrangement, giving a maximum of space, and cheerfulness due to size, number and placing of the windows in every room is an attractive feature of the little dwelling.
