Ridge Historical Society will circle back to the story of Thomas Morgan, the namesake of the Morgan Park Neighborhood and one of the early landowners in this region. Who was Thomas Morgan and the Morgan family? More importantly, why did he choose to locate here on the Ridge with his retainers and all his resources when the Ridge was basically wilderness.
Joseph O’Connor will briefly recap Thomas Morgan the person – both prior to his immigration to the US, and after his arrival in 1844. The main topic will be his father, James Morgan the stockbroker, who amassed the cash estate that underwrote his children’s lifestyle and Tom’s “escape” to Chicago. This will draw on records concerning James from the Bank of England and the House of Commons.
Come to our program on Sunday, March 22 at 4:00 pm and learn some local history.
About the Presenter
Joseph O’Connor, was on the RHS Board of Directors from 2009 until he moved to Munster, Indiana in 2020. He was a committed worker on the House & Grounds Committee. But his professional background was in insurance and investment. He was a member of the task force that originally processed the collection of Morgan memorabilia that came to RHS. His interest in the Morgan legacy and his study of the Morgan papers led him to further research and ultimately to make contact with resources in England to further amplify our understanding.
