DR. and Mrs. Carle C. Quale, 1661 W. 104th St., wanted something different when they made their plans to build in the Beverly Hills District.
The clinker brick, which they decided to use for the construction of the house, comes in clusters. It was put up very unevenly on the outside but each cluster was cut in half so that the interior would be even. When the first few rows had been put in place neighbors in the vicinity of the home wondered what was going up and it was not until the red tile roof had been completed that they became reconciled to this innovation in house construction.
After its completion curiosity seekers from all over the country made special trips to see the house and get suggestions.
An old fashioned reception hall is on the first floor and the living room is off this hall to the east. Back of the living room is a large sun parlor. French doors separate the living room and hallway and the living room and sun parlor. Casement windows are used throughout the house.
The dining room is on the west side of the house and the kitchen is back of this. The kitchen has all the built-in features and also has a comfortable breakfast nook.
The living room, dining room and hallway have the beam ceilings. There is also a little den or study on the first floor back of the stairway, which leads to the second floor.
On the second floor there are four large bedrooms, bathroom, with tile floor and three quarter tile walls. A large sleeping porch is at the rear of the house and is over the sun parlor. Adjoining the sleeping porch is a large balcony.
There are two linen closets in the hallway on the second floor and large closets in every bedroom.
The basement is full size and has a coal bin and fruit cellar. Hot water is used for heating the house.
In the yard there is a grape arbor made of six clinker brick pillars and 6×6 beams.
A garage and chicken coop is at the rear of the lot.
