A Story and a Half Bungalow

Address: 9256 S Loomis St
Published In: Weekly Review (1923-1928)

THE residence of Mr. and Mrs. Frank H. Zieman, at 9256 Loomis Boulevard, is a fine example of the well arranged story and a half bungalow. The house occupies a northwest corner site and presents a pretty picture with its trim lawns and neat flower arrangements. Red and white faced brick is used in the construction.

The entrance, on the south, leads into a vestibule with a coat closet and telephone booth. A large open doorway on the right admits one from here into the living room. This room is 15 by 23 and extends across the full front of the house, facing on Loomis Boulevard. A row of casement windows at the front, another pair in the south wall and two small windows above, and at either side of the natural fireplace in the north wall, provide exposures on three sides. The room is done in soft tones of grey with cream ceiling and blue drapes at the windows. The wood trim is natural walnut. Wall light fixtures are used.

The dining room is gained from the left of the vestibule through a pair of French doors. This room is done in tones of tan with tan window drapes. A central hanging fixture, done in polychrome, provides the light. A butlers’ pantry, to the right from the dining room, leads to the kitchen. Here an attractive color scheme of blue and French grey is used. The kitchen is well equipped with built-in appurtenances, including a comfortable breakfast nook. Steps from this room lead to the basement and to a service entry at the rear.

Two bed rooms are found on the lower floor, at the west end. These are gained from the dining room through a hallway, which also opens to a white tiled bath, with built-in features. The bedrooms are spacious, and attractively decorated, one with ivory wood trim and the other with French grey trim. At the extreme west end of the lower floor is an enclosed porch, built for sleeping purposes.

Stairs from the hallway lead to the second floor, which extends over the entire ground floor. This part of the house has not yet been completely finished but contains ample space for two well-lighted bedrooms and a store room.

A large and well finished basement extends under the entire home, and the west portion of this, according to the occupants, is large enough for dancing.

The heating plant is one of the water types.
