THE Colonial residence of Clyde R. Bates, at 9336 Winchester Avenue, strikes a rather unusual note of dignity and restraint in marked contrast to the generality of the modern efforts, which tend toward the unusual, the bizarre, frequently at the cost of whatever charm they might otherwise possess. The keynote of the design used in this house is simplicity. There is a freedom from garish ornamentation, a stark simplicity which is almost startling. Yet it is this same plainness that keeps the design from becoming trite. Set back behind a trim hedge of privet, there is about it an air of mellowness, of comfortable permanency that is as attractive as it is rare. It is a house that seems to merit more than any other, the name of “home.”
It is a small house that looks large. On the first floor are three full sized rooms, a breakfast nook and an enclosed sun porch. The living room runs across the north end of the building and has the porch at the back end. On the other side of a broad hallway is the dining room. Behind the dining room is the kitchen, a comfortable place, with a nice view of the rose garden in the rear. Just off the kitchen is a cool closet, where things can be laid away without much likelihood of spoiling.
Upstairs is a large hall, off which open three bedrooms. To the north is the master’s bedroom, which is also provided with a dressing room containing two large closets and a fireplace. Off this room is also a very large attic space, which can be used as a catch-all for discarded household utilities.
The bathroom is located at the rear of the house and has a white tile wainscote and floor and a very fine outlook over the garden. On the south side of the house are two other bedrooms, all of which, being on the corners have cross ventilation—a veritable blessing on hot summer nights.
This house, while not a new one, is well built and singularly up to date in its arrangements. For the small family it is ideal, being both economical to heat and easy to take care of, while at the same time it gives a very satisfying impression of spaciousness.
