LONG, slanting roof lines, distinctive outside chimney and arched entrance give individuality to this house, located at 10760 S. Hoyne Avenue. It is constructed of brick, with brown trim and slate roof.
The door is set back in a small entrance porch and leads into a tile-floored alcove, from which another door opens into the hall. The door leading to the basement stairs is immediately opposite, and to the left the hall rises three steps and broadens. Doors in the rear open into the kitchen and a coat closet. The stair to the second floor rises from the right, and in the front is a broad archway to the living room, which occupies the whole front of the house. A large fireplace of dull red brick occupies the center of the front wall, and on either side are double French doors, providing an abundance of sunlight.
The living room is finished in grey cream paint, which in connection with the golden wall candles and rubbed gum finish wood work provides an attractive color combination. In the left rear wall of the living room French doors open into the dining room, the left end of which is extended out to provide room for four windows.
French doors in the rear wall of the dining room open into a sun room, in which the walls are sand finish, in stone effect, and the trim is grey green.
The kitchen is finished in natural birch and contains a breakfast nook with built-in seats and table, finished in blue. A door in the rear leads to the small entry-way, and other doors allow access to the dining room and hall.
The stairs to the second floor rise into the upper hall. The space over the living room is occupied by a large owner’s bedroom, in which is a fireplace corresponding to the one on the first floor. Two closets are provided. Two other bedrooms occupy the rear of the second floor. Dormer windows are used to assure an abundance of light and air, each bedroom having ventilation from two directions. The bathroom, provided with a linen closet, is at the end of the hall. Two closets in the hall provide additional storage room.
The upstairs woodwork is finished in old ivory throughout. Rubbed gum finish is used for the living room, hall and dining room on the first floor. A distinctive feature of the lower hall is the wrought iron candle lantern, finished in gilt.
Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Porter and Mrs. Belle Atkins are the owners.
