Brick and Stucco Home

Address: 9142 S Winchester Ave
Published In: Weekly Review (1923-1928)

RECTANGULAR plan of construction, without achieving any effect of squareness, characterizes the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. N. Price, 9142 S. Winchester Avenue. The construction is of yellow, vertical-lined brick, with paneled stucco second story and tile roof. The trim is dark brown stained wood.

Entrance is from a roofed porch at the right side, into a reception room, containing a large coat closet. At the rear of the reception room a semi-concealed stair rises to the second floor, and at the left an archway leads to the large living room.

A five-section outset window occupies most of the front wall. A long window seat, with built-in bookcases at one side, adds to the air of comfort, as does the broad fireplace which occupies the center of the rear wall. A door to the right of this fireplace leads through a short hallway to the kitchen, while an archway at the other side gives access to the dining room.

At the left end of the living room French doors open into the large sun room, which is also reached by a door from the dining room. A four-section, curved window which occupies most of the side wall provides ample light and air in the dining room, in which the walls are paneled.

The kitchen is finished in birch. A large butler’s pantry and all modern conveniences are provided. A sewing room and lavatory are off a small hall at the rear. Space is provided in the entryway for the refrigerator. A screen porch is set in the right-rear corner of the house.

A rear stair from the kitchen meets that from the front hall at a landing, and a single stairway extends from there upward to the second floor.

Three bedrooms, upper hall, and bath occupy the second floor. An exceptionally large linen closet in the hall is provided with an outside window for ventilation. Plenty of closet space in each bedroom is a desirable feature. Second floor woodwork is of birch, that of the first floor oak in waxed finish.
