THE residence of T. B. Gist, 9411 Pleasant Avenue, represents a combination of architecture that is sedate, comfortable and well planned. The entrance is on the south over a squared red walk, that offers a colorful contrast to the yellow brick and the green clay tile of the roof.
Passing through a vestibule the hall is gained. Its walls are done with a tiffany sand finish. The trim is walnut. All rooms on the ground floor are accessible from this hall which, on the right, leads to the dining room through French doors. The wall finish here is the same as the hall. The fixtures are in Georgian silver, the room is furnished with Elizabethan period furniture, and the walls are wired with bracket lights. Through French doors, the morning room is gained.
The kitchen on the north, has high casement windows, ironing board cabinet, broom cabinet, waist paper chute and cupboard. Adjoining is a breakfast room with a great built-in cabinet. The finish in the breakfast room and kitchen is light maple.
Back in the hall, which is equipped with guest’s closet on the right, and lavatory at the end, through French doors the living room is gained. It has an antique marble fireplace with a white ivory mantel to match the trim. French furniture is used here and the room has windows on the north and south.
To the left is the sunroom. It is spacious and in the shape of a half circle, with 15 casement windows and the same number of smaller leaded ones above these. This room covers the entire front of the house. The floors are maple throughout and are covered with heavy carpets raisin colored.
The three bedrooms are all upstairs and are reached by a flight of steps and landing lighted by Florentine glass windows. A tile bath with built-in tub is on the south end of the upper hall.
The two bedrooms on the south open through French doors to a glassed-in sleeping porch. The bedroom on the north has an adjoining private bath and dressing room. All the bedrooms have spacious closets, and these rooms are done in walnut trim, and are exceptionally well lighted.
The basement of the house is plastered throughout, has maple floors and a child’s playroom, with built-in black board. The basement also contains quarters for the maid.
