THE A. F. Colgren residence, recently completed at 9155 S. Pleasant Avenue, presents a beautiful addition to this community of beautiful homes. The most striking features of the place are the extensive use of Indiana limestone in the construction and the adaptation of Italian architecture to present-day demands.
The entire exterior is done in limestone and the three-car garage at the rear is finished in exact replica of the house itself, both as to style and to material. The roof is of special colored tile to match the general color tone of the ensemble.
The home contains twelve rooms in all. The entrance is found on the north, and opens to a reception hall. The huge living room extends across the entire front and is 40 feet, 6 inches long, by 22 feet, 6 inches wide, and is 12 feet high. The ceiling in this room is heavily beamed with walnut, while the walls and ceiling are in Tiffany, old rose and tan antique Italian finish on sand plaster. Features of this room are a stone aquarium and fernery and huge stone fireplace of Italian design. The floor is of composition block.
In the dining room a tile is used for the floor. The library and reception hall carry out the walnut finish, and in the former the walls are paneled with American walnut, with the same wood used for the cornices. The balustrade of the stair, which ascends from the reception hall to the second floor, is of wrought iron, with the electric fixtures throughout made of the same material, in antique design, to match. The windows are typically Italian, being tall, arched at the top and of the casement type. These, especially in the living room on the street side, do much to give the home its distinctive tone.
The residence is admirably equipped with all of the most modern appliances for comfort, health, and convenience. These include a vacuum cleaning system, humidifier, incinerator, ice machine, and a hot blast heating plant with a ventilating system for both summer and winter weather.
Features of the exterior are a sunken garden and pool, equipped with an underground sprinkling system, and tasteful landscaping in which evergreens are prominently used.
