The Herbert Hesse Home

Address: 10874 S Bell Ave
Published In: Weekly Review (1923-1928)

THE seven room residence of Herbert Hesse, 10874 S. Irving Avenue, is one of the attractive new homes to be found in Morgan Park. The style is more or less an American development, with hints, here and there, of the English Colonial.

The entrance on the east side is distinctly Colonial with its pillars and heavy door. The entrance opens to a small tiled vestibule, and from here a French door leads to the stair hall, with its English staircase. Arches from the hall give admittance to the living room on the left, and to the dining room on the right.

The living room is quite large and attention is attracted to the large tile fireplace in the west wall under two stained glass windows. The room is unusually well lighted, with eight casement windows set in the south wall in a very shallow bay effect, and three more casement windows across the front, or east side. The room is done in tones of gray and cream with walnut wood trim. The windows are decorated with valanced draperies and the lighting fixtures are of the wall type, polychromed in harmonious colors.

The dining room is also done in tones of gray and cream, only here the walls are paneled in deeper colors. Walnut trim is also used here. A row of four casement windows is found at the front. French doors in the north wall admit to the sun room on the north side of the house. The fixtures in the dining room, both wall and hanging, are Colonial in design with crystal pendants. A swing door leads from the dining room to the kitchen on the west.

The sun room is furnished in red pressed brick, similar to that used for the exterior. A large natural fireplace occupies the west wall, while the north and east walls are broken by casement windows. A large reddish tile, set with blue mortar, is used for the floor, and blue is the predominating tone in the draperies and curtain poles and cornices.

The kitchen is done in pale green and cream with natural birch wood trim. It is compact and well arranged. A door leads from the kitchen to a rear hallway which contains a door to the basement, a French door leading to a first floor lavatory which occupies a central position on the west side.

The three bedrooms on the second floor are fairly large and have ample closet space. The largest bedroom occupies a position on the south side over the living room. Another is found at the front, over the dining room and the third is on the north side.
