Two-Family Home is Effective

Address: 9403 S Pleasant
Published In: Weekly Review (1923-1928)

The home of Otto F. Reich, pictured above, is, contrary to expectations at the first glance, a two-family home, with separate entrance for each family. The lower floor has its entrance on the north side of the house, the upper floor being entered on the south side. This arrangement gives unusual privacy of entrance and is far more effective than the double entrance which is commonly made use of by architects in planning two-family homes.

Since the upper floor is exactly like the lower one in its plan, the description which follows, although taken for the lower floor, the one occupied by Mr. Reich, is applicable to the upper floor as well.

Entrance is made from the entry hall into a large, square reception room, from which doors lead into the living room, dining room and rear hall. The living room invites attention first. A large brick fireplace occupies the center of the south wall. Built-in bookcases are arranged at either side of the fireplace and extend to the east and west walls.

At the west end of the living room is the large sun parlor, which extends the full width of the house and is particularly attractive with its potted plants, now that Spring is in the air.

The dining room is at the east of the reception hall. It contains built-in china closets and a built-in buffet. The kitchen is to the north of the dining room and is reached through a butler’s pantry. Also at the east end of the house, to the rear of the kitchen, is a bathroom and bedroom for the maid.

The rear hall, which is reached from the reception hall, runs almost the length of the house. At the east end of it, lies a room which is used for a radio and lounging room. A large radio set indicates that the house is not without amusement for the evenings. Coming back to the east is a study or office, quite business-like in its appointments. At the west end of the hall is a large bedroom, which is provided with large built-in clothes presses. A bathroom is also reached from this hall.

The house is provided with hardwood floors throughout and is heated by steam. It is located at 9403 Pleasant Ave.
