Well Arranged Colonial

Address: 10024 S Damen Ave
Published In: Weekly Review (1923-1928)

THE residence of Dr. G. E. Farley, 10024 S. Robey Street, presents an example of the well-arranged Colonial home. It contains seven rooms, including a large sun room, and a sleeping porch.

Red face brick is used for the exterior, with white wood and stone trim. The entrance is unusually attractive with its pillars set in a semi-circle, surmounted by a small iron-railed balcony. The entrance admits to a large and typically Colonial reception hall with an English staircase.

The living room, to the left as one enters, is unusually large, extending through the entire depth of the first floor, from east to west. It is finished in tones of buff for the walls, ivory wood trim and cream for the ceiling. The windows throughout the lower floor are wide and deep, extending down to the floor, and are set with small panes. A large natural fireplace graces the west wall of the living room, and is flanked by a pair of windows. This room opens to the sun room on the south through French doors, the sun room being finished in brick similar to that used for the exterior. It has three exposure.

The dining room is found on the northeast corner, being gained through French doors from the reception hall. Silver fixtures are used here and a pair of china closets are built diagonally into the east corners. The kitchen is adjacent on the northwest corner of this floor, and is finished in white tile and has a breakfast nook in one corner. Large cupboards are built into the walls and there is an outside icing arrangement. The kitchen also connects with a rear hallway, from which the reception hall can be gained, also the basement, and a lower floor lavatory.

The upper floor contains three bedrooms, one unusually large located directly over the living room. There are two baths on this floor and over all a large attic, gained by a disappearing staircase.

An oil-burning heating plant is used for this home.
