Kindergarten: a unique program – part II of a series on education
By Carol Flynn and Linda Lamberty
Tracing the evolution of kindergarten from its late 18th-century European origins to its establishment in the United States, this second part of an educational series delves into the philosophies of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi and Friedrich Froebel. It highlights the progressive approach of learning through play, physical activity, and interaction with nature, moving away from rote memorization. The narrative pays special attention to the prominent local educators who championed these methods in Chicago, notably the five Hofer sisters—who founded schools and training institutes—and the Howe family, whose descendants, including Annie Lyon Howe, even expanded the kindergarten movement internationally to Japan. Supporting historical documents, including an early 1900s ad for The Longwood Summer School, illustrate the broad impact these early educators had on the community and beyond.
