Freedom Seekers and the Underground Railroad

RHS is pleased to welcome the return of Dr. Larry McClellan, emeritus professor of sociology and community studies at Governors State University, President of the Midwest Underground Railroad Project returns for this program at RHS Sunday, February 15, at 4pm.

He will be presenting new information from his continued research on the personal stories of those who traveled the underground railroad through Chicago and onward to Detroit en route to Canada. McClellan will also have his book, “Onward to Chicago” available for purchase at the event.

McClellan has been instrumental in adding listings to the National Park Service Network to Freedom register of the Underground Railroad. He is the author of “The Underground Railroad South of Chicago” and “To the River: The Remarkable Journey of Caroline Quarlls, a Freedom Seeker on the Underground Railroad.”

McClellan’s book, “Onward to Chicago” won the 2023 Underground Railroad Free Press Hortense Simmons Memorial Prize for Advancement of Knowledge.
